The Wee Michael launches at Newhaven

The Newhaven Coastal Rowers proudly presented “The Wee Michael” to the community of Newhaven yesterday morning, Sunday 14 November at 0930, at Newhaven Harbour.

Our Guest of Honour, George Hackland, who was present at the last boat launch at Newhaven in 1928, described his experience when the Reliance was launched 82 years ago.  George named our skiff “The Wee Michael” and presented certificates to Mhairi Thomson and Heather Cloete, the two pupils of Victoria Primary School who won our naming competition.  Mhairi and Heather independently submitted “The Wee Michael” as their entries into the competition, not realising the other had done so!  Both girls linked the build and launch of our skiff to another great historical ship, “The Great Michael”, the largest warship of its time, which was built and launched in Newhaven over 500 years ago.  We are proud that our “Wee Michael” treads in its footsteps.

We would like to thank everyone that made the launch feel very special – despite the early hour and rain the launch was watched by a big crowd of wellwishers – we hope you all enjoyed it and thank you for coming.  We wish to thank the crews of the Ice Breaker from Portobello and St. Baldred’s from North Berwick for providing a magnificent salute and great support.

Our launch was a huge success thanks to the support of many local people and businesses including Cammy Day, Waterfront Edinburgh, Forth and Leith Neighbourhood Partnerships, George Hackland, Victoria Primary School, Corinthian Yacht Club, Seafield Coachworks, KallKwick, Distribution Unlimited, Edinburgh Boat Charters, Forth Ports, David Brand Snr, Get Branded, Loch Fyne restaurant and Peter Mitchell, our piper.  Thank you to you all.

This launch is just the beginning as we work towards forging stronger links with local schools, community groups and businesses to encourage everyone in the community to participate.  We look forward to our first regatta in May 2011 and most of all we look forward to welcoming new people to row and have fun!
